HRPG: SABM Sub-formats

ADVISORY NOTE: CONSIDER EVERYTHING ON RPG RESEARCH AS A "REQUEST FOR COMMENTS" (RFC). AS WITH EVERYTHING AT RPG RESEARCH, ALL INFORMATION IS PROPOSED BASED ON THE LATEST RESEARCH AND EVIDENCE-IN-PRACTICE INFORMATION. WE WELCOME DIFFERING VIEWPOINTS, PERSPECTIVES FROM MANY DISCIPLINES, ALTERNATE THEORIES, AND ESPECIALLY _CONSTRUCTIVE_ CRITICISM AND FEEDBACK. AS WITH EVERYTHING AT RPG RESEARCH IT IS AN ITERATIVE BEST EFFORT APPROACH THAT GROWS THROUGH THE INVOLVEMENT OF MORE AND DIVERSE CONTRIBUTORS.

Discussion Notes

SABM = Solo Adventure Book / Module.

Distinctively different than an IF like CYOA.

Binding format has legal implications.

Using term CYOA has LEGAL IMPLICATIONS due to trademarks and lawsuits (see ChooseCo vs. Netflix 2019)

See further discussion of solo adventure book and modules with specific examples here:

Important LEGAL ISSUES in the different between the SAB and SAM formats. For example see the Middle-earth Quest / Tolkien Quest books by Iron Crown Enterprises.

Note that while there are a number of examples of SAMs from the BECMI D&D series, the BECMI D&D SAMs generally stand out from many other SAMs out there due to the stepwise learning approach of BECMI lacking in almost all other RPGs.
